New Homeowner 101 – Top 5 Things to do When Moving in
Moving into your new home is extremely exciting! We get busy doing so many things for our new home, like buying new furniture, doing some major or minor upgrades, changing bathroom or kitchen fixtures, and so much more. Sometimes we forget to do a few small things which might be important for our homes. My Home Services have compiled a small yet important list to look into when you move into your new home in New Zealand.
Change Out the Locks
If you haven’t done it yet, then changing your house locks should be your priority. A lot of homeowners are going with keyless locks these days. They prefer the touchpad or PIN number locks. This new technology is helping people from getting locked out when they don’t have access to their keys or losing their keys. Sometimes we even go out running after our kids or even pets and get locked out. In those cases, if you have new upgraded locks, then instead of calling a locksmith, you can just let yourself in with the PIN number or one touch of your palm.

Change Smoke Detector Batteries
Another important thing to look at is the smoke alarm or smoke detector. If you have recently moved into a pre-owned house, then it might be a good idea to change the batteries in the smoke detector or smoke alarm. Most of the time, homeowners don’t pay attention to the smoke detectors until it’s very late. We recommend checking the smoke detectors for any battery replacements. Or if they need to be replaced, then upgrade smoke detectors soon.
Locate Main Water Shutoff Valve
In a water emergency, the main water shutoff valve is the most important thing. When you call your plumber for any plumbing emergency, they might ask you to shutoff the valve. A more appropriate term for the main water shutoff in New Zealand is “toby”. If you are unsure of how to turn off toby, then your plumber can explain to you how to turn it off.

Locate Fuse Box
Like toby, you need to know where the fuse box is. In any kind of emergency, whether it is related to electricity or a natural disaster, you must be aware of where the fuse box is.
Replace Toilet Seat Covers
If this is your pre-owned home, then why not change the toilet seat covers. You definitely don’t want to sit where other people sat. So why not change your toilet seat cover. It is not as expensive as you think it will be. Ask your plumber today!
