Check their License

There are people who may present themselves as certified tradesperson but you may end up being scammed. To avoid such situations, it is recommended to ask for their license card issued by the PGDB in New Zealand. Most tradies display their qualifications and certifications on their website, business cards, office, and/or van. All authorised tradespeople must carry their NZ Practising License which is issued by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board. You can also check their license on PGDB website.

Communicate every detail

Be clear about the job you want to be done. Discuss all job information with the tradie. It is important that they know the output you’re looking for. If you know, then tell them about the problems the job may have.

Get a quote

Getting a quote will give you an idea of how much you should expect to pay for the job. Sometimes quotes are estimates and may change if you add or modify services, products, or fixtures. It is always a good idea to approach multiple businesses to get an idea of how much your job will cost and which tradesperson offers what services.

Be flexible

You should be flexible when hiring a trades business or a tradesperson. Some unseen circumstances may affect the work timeline on your job. These circumstances may include bad weather, undetected or sudden problems on the job, etc. We all are humans so treat your tradesperson as the same. They may have some unforeseen circumstances or problems that may delay the work.

Be there when the job is done

Even though you are not required to be on the job site when the work is going on, for your peace of mind you can still be there to keep a track of the work as it happens. After they complete the job, inspect and see if you’re satisfied with the work.

Show your appreciation for a job well done

Appreciating good work always boosts and motivates people. Sometimes people give gift baskets to the tradespeople. If you are not one of those people, it’s perfectly fine. You can just call or email the business or the tradesperson and tell them what you think about their work. If they have a feedback section on their website, then you can leave feedback there. You can also leave a review for them on business listings.
